Rehoming Your Pet

The decision to give up your pet is never an easy one. The Yancey Humane Society has resources to support you in your search for a new home for your pet. There are steps you can take that don’t include surrendering your pet to the animal shelter. We are here to help!

Return to Shelter

If you adopted your dog or cat from the Yancey Humane Society, and you find that you need to rehome your pet, please give us a call. We ALWAYS take our adopted dogs and cats back into our shelter if you are unable to continue providing care.

Rehoming Resources

If you are a Yancey County resident and you did not adopt your pet from us, depending on a number of factors and if we have space, we may be able take your pet in. There is an animal relinquish fee of $20.00. We do ask that you try to rehome your pet first before calling us. Below are some options to help you with that.

It is always in the best interest of your pet for you to help find his/her new home. Benefits of you re-homing your pet include the following:

  • allows you to play a role in placing your pet with a new family
  • reduces the stress of transition for your pet
  • frees up resources for other pets in the care of the Yancey Humane Society.

In just a few minutes, you can create a profile for your pet, and upload pictures and videos of your pet. Interested adopters will contact you directly to learn more about your pet and set up a “meet and greet”.

Facebook Courtesy Post – just email or FB message us with a write up and pictures of your pet, and we will courtesy post on our FB page. This allows you to vet and control who your pet goes to, so you can ensure that it is the right match for your pet. This typically has a high success rate in pet rehoming.

List on Rehoming Websites – the below are websites that allow you to post your pet, and again, give you the ultimate control as to the type of home where your pet will live.
